WHAT SERVICES ARE INCLUDED IN HIRING ASLP? Artistic Sign Language Productions (ASLP) is committed to working with all community theatres and their staff and crew, from the start of the show to its' end, so that everyone feels satisfied and enjoys the performance. This includes interpreter script analysis, prep time, lighting and placement consultation, and advertisement. In addition to consultation, part of our service does involve PR, and we have had a following within the Deaf and hard of hearing community for many years. A special "Deaf Interpreted Theatre" Facebook page was created by one of the Deaf community leaders and audience members to advertise when ASLP interprets a production. We are happy to help get the word out to the community, as well as family and friends, sign language students, instructors, and others, so that your attendance to performances can increase
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE THAT IS REQUIRED? We are certainly thrilled to be a part of your upcoming season! and can easily work out a schedule of a selected production that would be targeted for Deaf and Hard of Hearing audience members. We prefer to have at least a 2 week lead time so that we can rehearse and prep for the production.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The rate of pay is dependent on many factors. Productions involve a use of a team of interpreters, (anywhere from 2-4) which is the standard practice of our National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NRID) for many reasons, including: assuring accurate communication takes place, by assisting colleagues in monitoring the overall setting, assuring appropriate and timely transitions, and cueing other team members as needed. Other factors that influence the cost may involve the length and type of performance (musicals typically require additional prep time), size of the audience, setting, pace of the speaker, and special communication needs of those in attendance. Currently, the cost differential is anywhere between $300-$500 per interpreter (this includes their travel time) and prep time may be approximately half to 1/3 of that, depending on the time to review the show and prep. We do have a director/admin/PR fee as well, however that is negotiable.
Depending on your budget, we are willing to negotiate a price that is comfortable for all parties and establishes a long-term rapport and collaboration. We want to make this an enjoyable experience for all!
WHAT MAKES YOUR AGENCY DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS? Our main goal is to ensure quality and accessibility for our Deaf audience members, and to offer theatrical interpreting that complements your unique production style. We have over 40 years of combined experience working as ASL interpreters as well as actors onstage in our communities.
